Reflection

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. Christians traditionally give up something during Lent. Pastor Ken Timmerman offered this list of things he hopes to give up during Lent in order to make the world a better place.

Service to Others – Lenten Mission Projects

Listed below are 4 different mission opportunities for you and your family to participate in during Lent. Outreach is asking every family to commit to completing at least one mission during the time of Lent.

Mission 1- Pasta for James Island Outreach

And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “Whoever has two tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.”- Luke 3:10-11

Please donate boxes of unopened pasta to be given to James Island Outreach to help feed the needy in our community- The donation box is labeled outside the office. Donations can be made through Palm Sunday.

Mission 2- Reconnecting with the congregation

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”- John 8:12

Please write a note, send a card, or a picture to a Shut-In or a member of the congregation you have not seen or talked to in a while and let them know you are thinking of them.

Mission 3- Socks of Love

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12

Fill a fun pair of socks with hand lotion, chap stick, a snack, and small gift card to Starbucks, Chick-fil-A, Panera, etc. then tie the socks with a ribbon to keep them closed. The Socks of Love will be donate to Roper St. Francis for the doctors and nurses. The donation box is labeled outside the office. Donations can be made through Palm Sunday.

Mission 4- Art Supplies for the Atrium for Shawn Jenkins Children Hospital

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”- Matthew 19:14

Please donate new unused art supplies to be donated to the Atrium at Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. The donation box is labeled outside the office. Donations can be made through Palm Sunday.

Worship

In addition to weekly Sunday morning services, we will have special services during Holy Week. Because of Covid protocols, it is necessary for you to sign up if you wish to attend in-person because of the limited numbers we can have in our Leisure Ministries Room.  The sign-up link is posted on the website home page or you can click here.

Sunday morning services will also be livestreamed at 8:30 and can be viewed on our YouTube channel.

  1. We will offer Maundy Thursday and Good Friday services. Our hope is that Holy Communion can be offered at the Maundy Thursday service. We will keep you informed. Good Friday will be a service of readings and reflection as Tenebrae brings our focus onto the shadows the crucifixion casts on the Christian Community. At the conclusion of the Maundy Thursday service, the altar will be stripped and the central cross draped in black. On Easter morning all those items will have been put back in place. We will not have a procession of bringing those items back into the worship space. The cross will remain draped in black and removed during the opening hymn as the Christian World celebrates the Lord’s victory over death.
  2. Easter Sunday, we will offer three worship services: 8:30, 9:45, and 11:00 a.m. We have no overflow possibilities and we will not have the shuttle service this year, so be sure to sign up. Three services will help us allow as many people as possible to come to Easter Worship. Each service will be formulated to last 45 minutes which will allow time between services for cleaning. There will be NO Sunday School on Easter Sunday.
  3. If our numbers continue to grow in worship attendance during February and March, we will consider having three services to accommodate those persons wanting to attend in-person worship. This decision to go to three services has not been made yet. This choice will be driven by our numbers. Each service in the LMR can hold 125 persons.
