The blessing box on the side of John Wesley facing Moore Street has shelves for canned goods, toiletry items, pasta and other non-perishables to be available to those who need help.  The John Wesley Youth have an ongoing challenge to put food in blessing boxes at the church or elsewhere during this time of quarantine.  All donations  of non-perishable items are welcome.

April 3-5 — Decorate your door for Palm Sunday.

The church is not open for services this year but the doors are still decorated with palm fronds.  Members are encouraged to spread the remembrance of Palm Sunday by putting greenery on their front doors to symbolize the procession of Jesus into Jerusalem at the start of Holy Week.

Tenebrae means darkness and commemorates the final hours of our Lord’s life on earth as he suffered death on the cross.  The tradition dates back to the eighth century and we have held a similar service at John Wesley many times. Fourteen candles will be extinguished as readings, including Christ’s final words, are read. Music will be offered as well.
In preparation for this service, please dim your lights and light a candle in your home so that you may extinguish the last candle with us, thus ending the service in total darkness.  This symbolizes our world without the light of Christ. Having commemorated Christ’s last hours and death on the cross, the celebration and joy of Easter will be especially meaningful.
