September 29th is 5th Sunday sharing
On the last Sunday in September, John Wesley UMC will host members of the Emanuel AME Church for the 8:30 am service. The joint worship during the early service every 5th Sunday is a new tradition established this year to focus on the common faith we all share.
This 5th Sunday Sharing grew out of an initiative by the Charleston County Library Foundation to bring different groups in the community together to sit down for a meal and talk across the table. Called On the Table, the effort focused on racial reconciliation and brought together two women — Susan Rice and Marlena Davis — who came up with the idea of John Wesley UMC and Mother Emanuel AMC worshipping together as sister churches on the fifth Sunday. Rice is a member of JWUMC and Davis is a member of Mother Emanuel.
“We planned to alternate visits to each other’s church on the 5th Sunday and we hope eventually to bring our choirs together,” Rice said. All women at John Wesley also have an invitation to be part of Mother Emanual’s Women’s Life Ministries, coming for one meeting only or becoming more active.
The organizers are looking for more ideas to have joint ventures. Marlena Davis and Susan Rice welcome suggestions from either congregation on future activities. You can reach Susan Rice by email.
